In the mobile phone marketplaces there is some competition which keeps prices down somewhat. Is there an API or development environment and some form of infrastructure to allow other individuals or organisations to develop apps for Sony cameras so as to give Sony some competition, or are Sony keeping everything strictly in-house?

It is all in-house. I spoke to the Sony folks at a NEX-6 presentation. The impression I got is they currently do not have mature enough platform for open use. However it seems they are looking forward to opening up or a\t least this did not sound strange.

Also the prices in mobile markets are lower not only due to competition but also based on quantities. Any rubbish app for 10c on Apple's store can make quite a bit of cache.

What's the deal here... are Sony just going to price out their new camera specs from now on, on an item-by-price basis with them charging the absolute max they think we will pay for each piece of functionality?

You can speculate all sorts of silly things. I think the idea is they can improve now cameras incrementally and not force you to upgrade every year.

I would pay 100$ for NEX-7 upgrade that adds all NEX-6 new stuff. This would be much cheaper than buying NEX-6 add that I like my NEX-7 more.

Is it going to be like the Apple and Amazon ecosystems where you are effectively locked-in to Sony once you have invested a certain amount of money in Apps (like music for Apple that only plays on iTunes/iPods/iPhones and Ebooks for Amazon that only work on Kindles) that can only be re-used on Sony bodies?

I would consider a couple thousand dollar Zeiss lenses and nice flash much bigger commitment than twenty 10$ apps.

I like the fact I can buy MFNR for my camera, but I am feeling less and less comfortable about where this may be going...

I think we ought to give Sony a chance. There are other makers of cameras if things turn sour. I think Sony simply want to be competitive and offer something different.

If you look at this forum there are 100s of requests for small changes to firmware. It would be better to have an app store for these, so cameras can ship on schedule every year, yet new features may come off cycle.

Hopefully we will see 3rd parties join the ecosystem. I doubt NEX can attract developers at similar scale to iOS or Android.

More likely guys like Adobe, DxO, Nik software etc. may jump in with clever ideas. Probably it is going to be more like PlayStation ecosystem - 10000$ entry fee but you get top of the line service & help from Sony building and selling your stuff.

I really like where Sony is going and hope it works out. I will leave any conspiracy suspicions out. Such bad ideas from sony can only harm themselves...most people are a credit card swipe away from Olympus, EOS-M, Panasonic G, Fuji X, Leica
