Yes, the light shining flat on the side of his face eliminates almost all detail. It's not "blown" as in clipped, but very bright and low contrast.

Yes, but have you tried auto grad? Seems logical that you can recover DR lost to high ISO, at the (affordable) expense of possible shadow noise. Get some contrast in those bright portions.

I may have an opportunity to go out to shoot some low light scenes, myself. If so, I'll report.
