D700 - What did i miss?

As good as the D90 was during its time, the D700 would have knocked your socks off, especially at high ISO. It's color rendition even when ISO goes above 800 would have pleased you. Now, unless you have spare change to pick one up cheap, I don't think you need to look back unless you need its higher FPS or your hard drive budget is extremely constrained.
