I have both lenses for the last 5-6 years, and used them extensively on D300 and D7k. In practical use, between 18-55 mm, at F8, the difference is minimal, to the point you can't tell them apart. But aside from above mentioned condition, the difference is apperant to obvious, not just sharpness, but the rendering and contrast. Hard to describe, but no doubt the 17-55 F2.8 produces more pleasing images in conditions other than bright daylight.
