FBI UCR - Murder, by state by weapons, 2011

In 2011 there were 12,664 homicides in the US (yes it's a lot but it's less than half of the rate 20 years ago, so we're making progress.)

Of those 12,664 deaths, 8,583 were by firearms.

Of those deaths by firearm, 323 were by rifles.  Yes...only 323 deaths by rifle.

There were 1,684 deaths by unknown firearm type.  If we apply the ratio of handgun deaths to rifle deaths, we get and additional 88 deaths for a total of 411 deaths by rifle.

On the flip side, 728 deaths were by "hands, fists, feet, etc." (includes pushing to death.)

Therefore, we would prevent more homicides by banning hands and feet than by banning rifles.

This demonstrates how pointless any ban on "assault weapons" (which is a made up label) really is.  Any such law, like the last one, will be nothing but feel-good legislation that won't prevent a single crime.

You can't stop crazy people, and you can't un-invent the gun.  By far and away, the best solution to school shootings is to eliminate the federal and state bans on guns in schools, and let responsible adults carry their guns on school grounds.
