I don't agree.  My main lens is the 28-70 f2.8 and it's tack sharp all the way through the range.  As a wire service photog I preferred carrying just two cameras: one with the 28-70 and one with the 80-200 (yeah, I'm an old timer).  This way I didn't need to carry a bag most of the time.  I did tuck a 50 f1.2 in my pocket for low-light and I still use it.

For perspective, I started shooting in 1980 back when pros didn't use zooms because, at the time, none of them were sharp enough for pro work.  Now it's a different story and I sure don't miss changing lenses all the time.
