I have yet to see someone suggest that you make this your only camera. I know some folks have an RX100 and others have DSLRs or mirrorless, etc. But there are people who make a cell phone their only camera so why not add an RX1 . . . it would certainly be an upgrade at 35mm.
i mean, i have it. its nice for some shots. its a gimmick. but thats all. but probably i can only say this, because i am using real PRO equipment all day long, so i feel the difference every day. this is why i call this thing a TOY.
I think it's cool you use PRO equipment all day long and use many of your posts to let people know about it. More power to you, PRO.
The PRO at Luminous Landcape (40 years of PRO photography) had this to say about the RX1 : "Ah ha", you say. "But those cameras take interchangeable lenses, while the RX1 has a fixed lens". My response to that is – "Of course it does". But then the RX1 will fit in a coat pocket, which none of the others remotely will, and it also has a totally silent shutter, which for anyone doing candid street shooting, documentary work, or photojournalism is a huge plus, if not a must.
and:
The only competitor on the horizon that I can see is the forthcoming new Leica M, due late winter or early spring 2013. It too will be full frame, 24 Megapixel and have an accessory EVF. Of course it will be quite a bit larger, heavier, and much more expensive even without a lens, but the comparisons will be inevitable and as a long-time Leica aficionado I'll be among the first to do them.
In the meantime, unlike most cameras that cross my desk, the Sony RX1 has captured my attention and admiration. Indeed I bought one as soon as I could because it's just the ticket for the kind of travel and documentary shooting that I so much enjoy doing.
You tricked me into thinking all PROs were of the same mindset. You tricker, you.
