I just shot an event with 2 D600 bodies, the type of job I would give to the D700, and I gotta say, I didn't miss my D700 bodies at all.

  • I know a lot has been made about the AF differences, but I haven't had any AF fails with the D600, even in some very tough, low-light scenarios.
  • I do notice the focus points are more bunched, but it doesn't affect the way I shoot and what I shoot. I can see why it might be an issue for sports, but not a killer one.
  • I do notice the D600 is lighter, and I do notice its grip is smaller, and since my hand aren't as wide as some, that's fine for me.
  • I do notice I have dual slots I can use for backup, whereas before I had to hope for the best during critical, can't-lose-100-photos situations.
  • In terms of IQ, the bottom line, I do notice less noise at high ISO, and a lot more dynamic range at base ISO.

The D700 is an awesome camera that has served me extremely well, and I am keeping one of my bodies. Much to my relief, I have learned that D700 and D600 color rendition is extremely close, so the two can partner side-by-side in a job without requiring heroic PP color-matching. Still, I think a lot of what transpires here and elsewhere in defense of the D700 over the D600 is rationalization to justify sticking with the older body over other choices.

Thanks for your input.

Wish the D600 had the same AF system as the D700.  May not be an issue with most of the shooting that I do.  I tend to use single point AF (center) and recompose techique.  Also, plan to keep the D300 expressly for those times I do sports events.  Couple the D300 with a MB-D10 and you have just about the perfect action camera with that focus array covering so much of the sensor.

The dual slots are a nice feature.  I use pro grade cards when I am shooting important events and have never had a failure (learned that lesson the hard way).  Only problem is I don't have a lot of pro grade SD flash. Still, having dual slots provides insurance as well as new work flows.  Assume you direct can jpgs to one and RAW to the other.

I can see now that it is improvements in IQ that I am hoping to realize the most.  If it doesn't have that then there is little reason to retire the D700.
