Sorry, but DPR got it right...

Clear Image Zoom offers no IQ benefits over post-capture upsampling

All you are doing is increasing the flaws displayed by the center of your lens and reducing whatever resolution you have to begin with. What is really sad is that since Sony only offers F/6.3 long zooms, you are turning them into F/12.6 zooms. The good news is you are chopping off the bad NEX corners, which does help.
