Zone focus? This technique was used in the past because MF was not fast enough for certain applications. AF usually provides a superior solution here (sufficiently fast and more accurate), and if it doesn't, you can of course prefocus AF and MF lenses alike.

Precise determination of DoF for critical applications (e.g., close-ups)? Better to use the EVF/LCD in magnfied view than DoF scales and measuring tape.
