For the rest, one must rely on the reputation of the brand and read some hands-on reviews.

That is what I am worried about! I'd rather deal with B&H than Nikon!

OK, so Mr. B and Mr. H look at you and say, "Sorry. You've taken more than 200 pictures.  You can't return it."

Gosman: "Why?  It's as good as new."

B&H: "Would you, or anyone, pay full price for this one, if they can get an untouched one instead?"

Gosman:  "Of course not!  What do you take me for?"

B&H: "Then we agree and you should understand our policy.  Don't be upset, though.  Down the street a way there is a dealer who may give you a fair price for used goods, and there is always eBay."

Gosman: "But I'm a major client.  I bought $100k worth of goods from you this year."

B&H:  "Oh, you must be THE Mr. Gosman.  Well, why didn't you say so?  Perhaps we can make a deal, sir.  We'll take your camera back at full price, and we will give you a nice price on this light fixture for your studio.  It's on sale.  Barely used.  Only $50k."

[The last two entries are purely imaginative, but might be a negotiating tool if true.]
