In addition to that, it allows the drive mode to be recorded in custom modes / user modes. Any "hard" button / switch is one additional setting you cannot save in custom modes (or recall when pressing custom buttons).

Frankly, that drive mode dial is a pretty poor idea, and I don't see many benefits for it (apart the ability to see what drive mode the camera is set to when it's switched off).

Just some observations a lot of this is down to taste

I'm not exactly sure I agree with this. Ergonomics / user interface can be a pretty objective affair.

Most people love it. (drive mode dial) I found it great on the D7000 (shame about a few other areas)

Note on the Minolta 7 digital and film bodies the drive mode is "on the right" hand side, not left like the Nikon's though you don't have a top LCD.

The advantage of the drive mode dial is that unlike pressing a button then going through the settings, you just set it instantly to what you want.

The disadvantage is that you have to let go of the lens. NICE! Then set the drive mode with your left hand, on a not too ergonomically designed control. Ho-hum.

With the 6D, you can just do all of it with your right hand, your left hand does not have to stop holding/supporting the lens. Do you get the advantage now?
