I rised the same question myself a while ago and come to the conclusion that the 9-18 was the best alternative for me. Most tests and reviews say that the 7-14 has slightly better IQ, but to almost double price and size. 9-18 is a very nice piece of mechanics. IQ is good enough to take stunning photos, and how often do you really need 7-8 mm? And 9-18 stretches a bit further in length, which makes it more useful as it comes closer to a normal lens.
For the money you save yuo can buy a Samyang 7,5 to play with, and get som money left.
