tripod head for photo + video!!

I'm posting this in the MFT forum since there was almost no interest in the "Accessories" talk forum: Thread here . Maybe someone here has a good idea...

I'm frustrated at manufacturers refusing to produce a head that can do two things (unlike our cameras - especially mirrorless, which are good at photos AND video). Tripod and head manufacturers and those explaining such items say very clearly on numerous websites, "there are 3-way heads and ball heads which are good for still photographs, and fluid heads that are good for video. Choose the one that is right for you" as though the world simply MUST be divided down the centre.

Somehow it hasn't occurred to them that since our cameras can do 2 things, and most photographers don't want to buy, travel with or carry around 2 tripod heads, maybe the heads should be able to do 2 things! I've seen remarks all over the net from photographers wishing for a simple head that is good and smooth for video, but which allows a camera to flop over for portrait shots. Is this technically difficult? NO!

Yet there are only a very small number of options available! This  seems to me to be a GAPING hole in the market, with exceptionally few interested in filling it.

Manfrotto has produced what looks to be an extremely interesting and feature-rich head, the MH055M8 . But it is expensive, quite large and has more than triple the capacity required for a mirrorless camera and lens. There may be a few ball-heads out there that can lock off the side-tilt motion so video can be shot with a controlled level, but these are also the bigger, heavier, high capacity ones and I've heard that ball-head movement is simply not smooth and fluid enough for good video shooting.

So the only options seem to be:

  • buy, travel with and carry 2 heads!
  • get the new big, heavy, expensive Manfrotto head suitable for full-frame cameras with battery grips and BIG glass (laughable for mirrorless cameras, too big for our camera bags, and not suitable for a hike),
  • use an L bracket - these are ridiculously expensive and tend to get in the way of battery doors, microphone jacks, card slots etc unless they are specifically made for your APS-C Canikon. I haven't found one that will fit my GH2 well and allow its articulated LCD to be manipulated.
  • use a square QR plate so the camera can be mounted sideways on a small video head and the head tilted 90 deg down for portrait shots. This is the lightest, smallest solution, but requires an aditional QR plate system (on top of the tripod head QR system) and possibly investing in an odd square QR system design. Who does this? I know of ONE SLIK plate that is square and fits nothing else, and some Gitzo plates - which only fit their stuff. Then I found this Cullman Concept One plate that apparently fits Arca-Swiss clamps. Anyone know how well Cullman Concept One plates fit in other Swiss-Arca clamps?

So what do the flocks of photovideo folks with little MFT cameras (that are actually good at both!) do when they want to shoot both photos and video?

Ideas, experience and feedback of any kind welcome! thanks.
