The MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro lines already have gotten rid of both internal optical drives and internal hard drives, in part to save users from the inconvenience of dragging around weight for stuff that may not be essential to have on a trip.

I disagree with the discontinuation of iDVD and the removal of CD/DVD burners from iMacs, and I hope (against all odds) that classic MBPs continue to be an option. But in a laptop context, only some users have reason to see the trade offs as favoring mechanical drives.
