I absolutely agree, and do believe many users mistake user error (ie AF misses) and relate that to poor sharpness. I think we've all seen this happen a number of times.
I do want to point out, however, that my comments aren't just a few observations using this lense out in the field. I loved and used the 7-14mm almost exclusively on a tripod, and whenever it was on a tripod, almost exclusively in LV and MF.
While I don't deny I may make mistakes every now any then, I would like to put forth that my experiences with this lense were long and detailed, I would like to believe my experience leads to accurate observations... Including taking into account focus distance and DOF.
The 7-14 was a game changer when it was released... It's still An amazing piece of glass.
