Unfortunately it is not only Nikon US having this "policy", I'd say in my country their main job is to pick one of two excuses - one is "impact damage", the other one is "within specs".

It used to be lesser of an issue few years ago, but these days it becomes an issue considering 'perfect" QC of Nikon.

Out of 4 lenses I purchased within last 2 years, ONE works OK.

The ones with problems are:

nifty-fifty 50/1.8G - focuses wherever it wants

24-70/2.8 - was soft with lots of CA, after servicing improved but softer then before

14-24/2.8 - FF on short end and short distances, big BF on long end and far distances. Soft even on D700.
