By "nope" I pretty much don't use it as a rule - only when I know I will need it. Lots of experience, I guess, as it is pretty much automatic when I shoot (I don't do events, weddings, etc). I made a pretty good living teaching and shooting thousands of rolls of Velvia 50. I soon learned to rate the film at 64 as opposed to 50 (and bracket as well). Yellow highlights were gone in an instant if I didn't - along with others. I also learned to take "snips" before developing the whole roll. There were times when even a push 1 or 2 was possible! (dull dreary days) Making the EI (exposure index) 100 or even 200.

"Histograms" didn't come with film cameras. By the way, the histogram you get with digital cameras - on the back of the LCD - are really histograms generated from in-camera jpeg files. In other words, they are not accurate for the raw file.

Interesting post.
