Why some External Drives don't show up?

Thanks for both of your replies.  I did track down a firmware update on the Western Digital site and installed it one external drive at a time - no other external drives connected.  All drives have been showing up after computer shutdown and startup.  So I will keep my fingers cross that all is fixed.
