I didn't read the whole thread but this is nonsense.   You should be choosing your focal length based on the image you want to crate not just arbitrarily only using a 50mm or zooming until you fill the frame.   Use a zoom like it is a bunch of prime lenses.  Decide what focal length is best for the image you are trying to make and set the lens and leave it there.  The advice of just use a 50mm is based  off of not understanding that the focal length is just as much a critical creative decision as the aperture you choose.  Standing closer with a 50mm will not give the same results as shooting with say an 85mm and standing further away with a 50mm instead of using a 24mm will not give anywhere near the same look.
