GRD4 weird spontaneous flash behaviour (help!!!)

with regards the flash. I've seen this a lot with my GRDI. I always suspected that it was to do with AF. I think the flash strength is linked to the camera's focus distance. I speculated that if the camera cannot focus correctly the flash exposure is wrong. I've never run tests to prove it.

Practically, I know it's not much use but I lived with it. Try different focus methods?

Sometimes I deliberately set the flash output  to -1 or -2.
