By all means read KR for entertainment value, but don't take him seriously. And keep in mind he makes twice as much in commissions if you get a wide zoom and a tele zoom instead of a single medium zoom.

In the Canon world, the new 24-70mm f/2.8L II outperforms all their primes other than the 50mm ones. Yes, even the 35mm f/1.4L (at f/2.8, of course). This is not quite true of Nikon where the primes are better and the 24-70mm f/2.8 in need of a refresh, but most working photographers use f/2.8 zooms rather than primes.
