What kind of camera stores in your town?
Dec 18, 2012

I just spent two weeks in Geneva and when I wasn't in a museum, sight seeing or photography task, I was looking at their camera retail environment. Amazingly there are several good camera stores in this relatively little, but very rich city. From one store that is not much bigger than a shoe box to a large store with everything from stuido gear to point and shoots, they were all chock full of the latest and top-line gear. And often the gear was walking out the door with a customer! Prices were about what you would spend in the USA on the web marketing giants. Also, they have tons of literature (camera porn that seems to be so darn rare here in the USA. Talking to the staff of these stores I learned that they are not so worried about losing sales to the internet! If you don't want to buy from a camera store, they have several general retail stores that have Massive (by US standards) camera departments, some even with mini Canon or Nikon tradeshow booths! (that blow Best Buy out of the water!) -- with prices competitive with internet vendors and immediate ownership! Makes Cleveland's lone camera retailing chain look anemic by comparison! I know nothing on this side of heaven will beat B&H in Manhattan for size and scope, but Geneva was very impressive for number of stores, quality of gear, etc.

Makes me wonder how folks who don't have access to such big stores can make informed decisions about various makes and models without the ability to "kick the tires!"
