For me holding a slr/slt at arms length is not a natural position for the process of composing a shot.   The only time I use the LCD for composition is as a waist level finder, occasionally when the camera is mounted on a tripod, or when an odd position is necessary to get the shot.

I also wear glasses for near vision and have no problems using the EVF even in bright light if I wear a visor or ball cap.    Furthermore, you can adjust the EVF optics so that it can be used without glasses if ever required.
