I use whatever lens is going to work for the shot. Sometimes it's a 70mm focal length. A 50 is not going to work if 70 is what I need to compress some depth, etc. With me zooms are rarely a distance thing - they're used because of the look I get from particular focal length.

The Rockwell files - take it all with a grain of salt. Some of his stuff is good but if you are relatively new it's hard to discern the good stuff from the baloney. Follow your instincts and use what works for you.
