I do event photography and one shot will be shooting someone or something right next to me, and the next shot might be of something a 100 or 200 feet away, and then something further, and then something closer.

There is just now way to manage all of the distances rapidly without having a boatload of cameras hanging from your neck with a variety of lenses on them.

Likewise, lots of the zooms just don't have the reach.  I know I am sacrificing quality, but I have been shooting 18-250 and 18-270 lenses on my DX body.  Have ordered a D600 which will replace my D7000.  I have a 24-120 which is wide enough, but not long enough, so I don't know what I will do for a lens yet.
