Why are there no good AF 50mm lenses available for Nikon?

Coudet, that's exactly my question. We have excellent 85mm lenses available for both Canon and Nikon. Also, very good 35mm lenses. Why not a 50mm?

Maybe the better comparison is with Canon: it sounds to me, ROOOO, like you're asking for something like the Canon 50mm f/1.2L in the Nikon system.

No, he's asking for something a lot better than Canon 50/1.2.

So, I suppose what I am getting at, here, is that none of the popular system 50mm lenses (Canon, Pentax, Sony-Minolta, Zeiss ZF/ZE, Sigma) would meet your standards if you're setting a Summicron or Summilux bar but expecting to pay much, much less for it.

Correct.

But, there's the question - why there isn't a better lens available, even if it would cost more?

Canon seems to have attempted something a little more special than the others, but it's not a complete success, either.

Correct.

So maybe the Nikon route--50mm lens as jack of all trades but master of none, priced accordingly--is exactly the right course.

It's certainly the hassle-free and the cheap course.
