What you need is a "wide" lense not a "telephoto". I will be the devils advocate here. Back in October I was at my niece's wedding and shot the whole thing with 28 mm 1.8g on D600. I took 400 odd pictures. I used my legs to zoom in and out however, having a wide lense was critical to capturing the "mood" and the "story" and the pictures came out perfect thank you.
Now before everyone jumps on me, they had pro's hired too and they were using Cannon rigs with the usual 28-70 lenses. However, even talking to them they were using more the wide end up to 50 mm.
For me it was good opportunity to see if I could shoot a wedding with just a prime ( I am not a pro).
