Good topic. I've campaigned for years for Nikon to give us a great 50/1.4, so far they haven't bothered.

I recently ordered a D600, but am having second thoughts about it after having done a bit more research. My question is simple: why does there not seem to be a great 50mm autofocus lens available for this system?

Because Nikon made their 50mm lenses with price in mind; as in, they try to make the best possible for $400, not the best possible.

The 50mm Summilux-M ASPH is a great lens, though a little too big for my taste.

No kidding. Great lens.

It seems like 50mm lenses are the best focal length from a performance/cost standpoint.

Among the fast lenses, 50mm are typically the worst.

Why is there nothing that's a step or two up from the 50mm f/1.8 for Nikon in terms of rendering and sharpness wide open? (It doesn't seem to me like the f/1.4G really delivers exceptional performance at f/1.4.) Thoughts?

Price. Nikon 50/1.4 is a $400 lens. Leica 50/1.4 M is great, and it's $4,000.

Nikon never made a great fast 50mm. Canon didn't, and Zeiss didn't either. Zeiss made a crap 50/1.4 for $700, now they're making a 55/1.4 for $3,000-4,000, we'll see how they do. In the meantime, I'm using Nikon's cheap 50s, and dreaming of something better.
