18-200 zoom rubber ring question

Hello ALL,

My 18-200's rubber zoom ring became loose and significantly increased its perimeter. I fixed it using doublesided adhesive tape, but it is annoying so I ordered a replacement ring.

My question is: Is the rubber originally glued by the factory or only friction is what holds it in place? I simply cannot remember how it was before the problem. I have some doubt that the glue from the adhesive tape caused additional expansion of the rubber.
