The alternative is to spend a couple of hundred more and get the 6 which is basically the same as the 5r but with a view finder and onboard flash and comes with the smaller 16-50. However it does not have a touch screen and the screen flips out only to 90 degrees, not 180 like the 5r. The 5r is an excellent camera especially at that price. Where are you seeing that?
Alternatively you could buy a nikon 1 system which has fast af, small lenses but a much smaller sensor and lower resolution. The canon system has an aps-c sensor but glacial AF speed. So if you have lots of time on your hands while you wait for it to focus on stationary objects then by all means buy a canon.
