Lots of good choices for software here. Only you can really decide what works best for you.
I originally used Photoshop Elements to import and organize then used the regular Photoshop for any complex adjustments. This worked pretty well as I did not shoot RAW all that much and I had the time to spend with photoshop.
Now things are different. My time to process images is greatly reduced but I am sdhooting RAW much more often. I have found that once you get over the initial learning curve with lightroom, it is sooo much easier and quicker. Adjusting multiple images at the same time is a snap; great image enhancement controls; the Nik programs integrate seamlessly into it (Silver Efex, Color Efex, Viveza etc...)
For me, Lightroom is by far the best option. I also use Picasa for emailing photos and uploading to web albums for sharing.
