I just wonder, what's the use of the PDAF points showing in the EVF/lcd of the NEX6/5R ? I know I can turn them off, but I'm not sure that I'm turning off PDAF at the same time then. If not, I really don't understand what's the use of showing them except for making it clear PDAF is 'on'.

Turning off the PDAF points do NOT turn off PDAF.   It would be active if the compatible lens is mounted and aperture less than F/6.3.

The purpose of the PDAF points is for you to track moving subject, and you can aim and ensure that the subject remains within the ranging points for accurate movement tracking.   Even for non-moving subject, AF for subjects within the PDAF points should give you less hunting.
