So, unless you want it to be really cheap or really tiny/light, the 35mm f2 IS is superior in all ways I can think of. I have the hood, too - the ES-52 - and yeah, not sure I need it But it seems to protect the lens a little, so I keep it mounted. It builds only a few millimeters.

That said, you cannot go wrong with the 40mm pancake
