In a public place, such as Times Square, or the central park in Little Red Crick Nova Scotia, it is my opinion that you are, for all intents and purposes, unable to demand not to have a photo taken where you are in it.

I can't speak for British or Canadian law, but in the US you can demand all day long not to have your photo taken in public, but the photographer is not legally obligated to comply.  Me, I stopped pointing my camera at children years ago.  I prefer photographing things and adult people.  There is simply too much paranoia and hysteria over photographing children in public, especially what with what happened in Connecticut yesterday.
