What's the use of the PDAF points ?

I just wonder, what's the use of the PDAF points showing in the EVF/lcd of the NEX6/5R ? I know I can turn them off, but I'm not sure that I'm turning off PDAF at the same time then. If not, I really don't understand what's the use of showing them except for making it clear PDAF is 'on'.

Anyone can shine a light on this?
