It depends on what you're shooting.  For sports or any situation where the subject is moving, VR is essentially useless.  If you're shooting grapes, it's very useful.

I'm not a big fan of VR because of the added expense and the fact that it adds one more fidgety electron thing to go wrong with the lens.  But that's my (non-professional) opinion.
