Have you thought about renting a lens and/or tele-converter combination? This way you can see what these more specialized lens can do.

I'm typically a landscape shooter but once a year I head to Bosque del Apache NM to shoot Sand Hill Cranes and related migratory birds. I've shot the following:

  • 50D and Canon 100-400. That lens is miserable in low light and quite good in better light. Generally sharp thruout entire zoom range
  • 50D and Tokina 80-400. Slow focusing and soft beyond 300
  • 50D and Canon 400 f/5.6. Excellent combination and reasonably easy to hand hold
  • 50D with Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and 1.4X tele-converter. Fantastic thruout
  • 7D with Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and 1.4X tele-converter. Fantastic thruout
  • 7D with Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and 2.0X Mk III tele-converter. Good generally but somewhat soft at long end and slow to focus
  • 7D with Canon 400 f/4 DO Excellent results

As you can see, there's lots of options. If this is not your style of shooting normally either renting a lens combination or possibly buying one and then reselling it after your trip might make more sense.

  • YMMV
