So, for many of us Canon users over the years, it has only been fairly recent that we've got DRC and Shadow Correction with an opportunity to reach up to 400%.  So, if I am in manual and plan on using a Speedlite in the hot shoe, it is really up to me to guess whether to use/how to balance settings?  So, I might want to let the camera choose the setting when placing DRC and Shadow at Auto, but then how might I include - in my rough calculations - whether to use minimum, moderate or maximum flash?  As such, the histogram becomes a much less useful tool under these circumstances?

This sounds like a real guessing game if going on manual with flash -- almost like you should have enough general practice AND/OR  have shot in the same environment before in order to start estimating flash exposure?
