My advice - don't feel self conscious

I try and ride above peoples prejudices about cameras.  If you don't you are going to be awkward with any camera and will end up using some laggy iphone just to fit in and "be cool".

I took a DSLR and Mirrorless cameras to my cousins wedding.  I used the "huge" EOS40D with its"extra big" 24-105mm L lens - with add on flash - and got some great situational photos.  My aunt has asked me to make up a photobook with them.   Obviously the DSLR stuck out - but is this an issue for you ?   My uncle took the mick and we had a laugh when he accused me of weighing down one side of the table with it !!!

After the formal side of the wedding was over I stuck the EOS in the boot of the car and used my little Panasonic G2 / 20mm f1.7 mirrorless since it was easier to carry round.

Horses for courses

If I were you I wouldn't let the prejudices and attitudes of others affect your photography though - unless you want to end up with the same blurred out of focus rubbish pics they have !!!!   I am not saying that self-conscious people will never take a good photo but its a major barrier...  YMMV !!!:-)
