SLT for Bifs?
In reply to seilerbird666, Dec 14, 2012

A $60 investment, $35 for the Red Dot, the rest for the shoe adapter.

Pelicans are fast fliers. With my setup I shot about 200 frames in 1 hour, 1/3 of them keepers.

I use the A55 & mostly the 500mm/8 reflex for BIF's. Works well, the slide show effect is a bit troublesome, but you would experience some similar issues also with a DSLR, with the mirror flapping all the time. No trouble in focusing with the A55 at some 7 fpm. The major issue is, at least with a focal length of > 300 mm, to find and follow the taget if it moves sideways at high speed. I think an OIS lens would be good to have.

However, both problems I have solved with my red dot laser range finder. Getting good BIF's is now child's play. Well, almost - still requires lot of patience. You need to fine tune the finder's shoe screws to the target distance to avoid the parallax error. Set the cam in AF-C, AF on center spot - the cam will trigger automatically when bird is in focus.

There have been numeros posts on the topic of the red-dot finder concept.
