High speed flash sync

Hi,
I own a Nikon D70s and I am looking for an upgrade. The best thing about D70s is the maximum flash sync speed of 1/500s which has been missing in the next models that have been launched. Even D300s and D600 do not have this sync speed. I use a very old Nikon SB16 flash which also works extremely well with my D70s in "all" manual setting.
Will Nikon ever produce a DSLR camera (price below $2000) with a good sync speed of 1/500s. My question to Nikon is simply why did it degrade in this respect. I mostly do macro photography with the cheapest equipment available (extension tubes, BR2A) and for this reason a good flash sync speed is very important to me.
Will the Nikon community be kind enough to enlighten me on the options that I have for upgrade.
Thanks
Manohar
