Pro athletes and racers don't buy their tools. They get their tools for free because the manufacturers know that the masses will buy what the pro is using. The masses are gullible enough to think the tools make the pro good. But, it is talent and years of practice that make the pro good. Michelangelo was not a great sculptor because he had the best chisel.

But I'll bet that Michelangelo had a *favourite* chisel and would have been very upset if someone decided to surprise him by replacing it with a shiny new one from the local DIY store.

I also expect that Mr Bolt wouldn't wear a pair of rubbish sneakers in an Olympic final, regardless of his sponsors' marketing ideas.

This is all a bit academic - I'm sure that everyone on this forum understands that a good camera is not sufficient, by itself, to make a good photograph. But if that camera can provide an average user with a photograph which is sharp and well exposed, OR provides more enjoyment and satisfaction for the user, then surely that's a good thing, and the perceived 'value' of the camera is in the eye of the beholder.

Also, while I'm on a rant, this is DPReview - isn't it all about the search for sharpER, fastER and bettER cameras? It's no place for sanctimonious condemnation of 'pixel-peeping' as if that's an unworthy pastime. Go to a gallery if you want to get all pompous about 'photographers vs testographers'. (That wasn't aimed at you Randy - just wanted to get it off my chest...)
