You need reach for wildlife and on the DX that will be equal to a 630 f5.6 on full frame. You can lose the TC when light gets bad.
If you cannot afford the above then the 70-300 VR is going to be ok. My wife uses that lens but I am about to treat her to something better

I concur with Steve's opinion. I have owned both lenses (and the TC1.4EII) and both the IQ difference and ability to add a TC weigh in favor of the prime. If your body is recent enough to use at ISO 400-800, it should make for pretty good safari shooting.
