Hi, some tripods, like the manfrotto 190Xpro or 055cxpro, have a central column that can very easily be converted to the horizontal position, letting you shoot straight down. It works really well for copy work.
If you didn't do it yet, it might be worth checking if your current tripod has that capability. If not, going with the table idea is probably the best solution, unless you feel like changing tripod!
alternative I came up with is to purchase a front surface mirror and tilt it at a 45 degree angle and then shoot straight at the mirror.
This wouldn't work with a normal mirror, as the reflective back coating and the glass surface each return an image, but slightly misaligned, leaving you with a gost image superposed to the main one.
