300mm f4 or 70-300 f4.5-5.6?
Dec 14, 2012

I'm heading to Kenya soon and will probably have a day or two on a safari. i don't have any lenses with enough reach for wildlife shots - unless we happen to get too close for comfort - so debating, first, whether to pick one up at all (maybe not and just enjoy the safari through my eyes, not a viewfinder? I suppose it's an option...) If I do get one, which would be better - a 300mm f/4 prime or a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom?  Obviously the zoom has advantages of convenience - but might the quality of the prime win out over that? Or are there different options you'd recommend?

I shoot dx, and will have two bodies with me - for the time that I am using the long lens on one, the other body will either have a 16-85mm lens or an 85mm prime. But for most of trip, I think the long lens will be staying in my bag, whichever one it is.

All input appreciated!
