I have the A57 with 16-50mm lens zoomed in at maximum to a fixed object at ~10ft away. Comparing image shake on LCD screen between SteadyShot ON vs OFF, I cannot tell the difference between the two. I also tried comparing with Focus Magnifier to no avail. Back when I had NEX-5N with kit lens, I did a similar comparison and the difference was more apparent, but since I don't have it anymore, it might be just a placebo. I'm young and my hands don't really shake much, think I have a decent grip on the camera.

Can you easily tell the difference of SteadyShot mode with Sony SLT camera? Not sure if my A57 is defective or not.

The A57 will only engage steadyshot when the shot is being taken. The 5N uses in-lens stabilization so you can see it before you shoot.
