What's wring with the 1.4/35?

I bought the 1.4/24 because I thought it performed markedly better than the 35 and I like the length. That said I didn't think the 35 was rough. Just not the equal of my 85, 24, 60 or 200.

After reading the last page of this lenstip review, which really takes the 35 down a peg, I'm more than a little surprised.

Could this all be down to a lack of Nano coating? Is this a bad sample? It's odd to see Nikkor glass at the very bottom of the pile when so many of their other lenses are so great.

Is the 35 that bad (relative to the competition)?
