I would have thought it was obvious by now that with this colour filter array its inevitable that whilst B&W resolution is really strong you will always get slightly lower colour resolution. This is just basic physics/maths and those waiting for some mythical magical algorithm to solve this issue will be waiting a very long time indeed.
There is an obvious point to all this that no one seems to get. If X-trans is so clever and "better" then why after all these years of Bayer sensor cameras did it take little Fuji to come along and do it? I wouldn't be surprised if the engineers at CaNikon or Sony had thought of this years ago and rejected it.
Don't get me wrong I love my X100 and will likely buy an X pro for myself for Christmas but this X trans is pure marketing hype type technology to create a differentiator. Even the fantastic 35mm lens on the X-pro shooting a resolution test chart can't actually get any more resolution than the Panasonic GX-1 with the PanyLeica 25mm mounted. The numbers are all there over on photozone.de.
I can't say the X-trans sensor is better, but in some ways it has clearly out-shined it's Bayer sensor competitors. When it comes to low light and noise, the X-trans puts the the competition to shame. I agree that there are issues with it and the current RAW processors, but we're also talking a first generation sensor. Think about smaller sensors where noise levels go through the roof after iso 400. The X-trans could really be a game changer there. For similar sized and larger sensors at low iso settings, the X-trans output is good, but it falls short in a number of places. This could due to the processing algorithms or the sensor. Who knows. If Fuji keeps developing the X-trans hopefully we'll see it progress and we'll eventually get the best of both worlds. It wasn't like the Bayer sensor became what it is overnight either.
Either way, my pics look great as 8X10's or on-screen when I'm shooting at ISO6400, f1.4 at 1/60. Really that's as far as 99% of all my personal photos go so I'm a happy camper. This is something that every other camera I've owned that's not FF couldn't do.
