It just depends on what you want to shoot and what physical space you'll be working in.  I purchased the 85 f/1.8 purposely for indoor sports - basketball mainly.  Love this lens but on a crop sensor, it's too long for indoor portraits.  For that reason, I have the 50 f/1.4 which in my situation is perfect for close up portraits.  Both are great lenses with fast focusing and can be used interchangeably but for me it was the distance I had to work with.  I'm now finding that the 85 is too long for high school basketball where I can get on the floor under the basket.
